The Beginning
The Sardar Patel University Museum previously known as ‘Museum of Art & Archaeology’ is one of the important multi-disciplinary University Museums in India. It was established in 1949 by Charutar Vidyamandal and was handed over to the Sardar Patel University on 1st July 1960. Initially it was housed at second floor of Bhaikaka Library. In the year 1994 Museum Bhavan was constructed within the University campus. The Museum is rich in terms of antiquity’ collection and has potential for research as well. Also it is situated in the University campus right besides the other Post Graduate Departments.
The Museum is well known for the collection of South-East Asian Bronzes, which were collected and then donated to the Museum by Dr. N. A. Thoothi (Reader, Department of Sociology, University of Bombay)
Bhailalbhai Patel, the founder of the University and an educational township of Vallabh Vidyanagar, himself collected some important antiquities for the Museum.
