Welcome to the Post Graduate Department of Sanskrit at Sardar Patel University. Sardar Patel University, situated in sylvan surrounding of trees, birds and learners, has its own identity as a shardapeeth of Western India. As such Vallabh Vidyanagar is the reincarnation of Valabhipur, the ancient capital of learning in Gujarat. With the blessings of the founder Vice-Chancellor Bhaikaka the Pali-Prakrit & Sanskrit Department was established in June, 1958. Right from its inception the Department, under the leadership of Vedic Scholar Dr. B.H. Kapadia (1958), has taken up pioneering work in the areas of Vedic Pauranic Literature. This Department established a direct contact with German scholarship of Indology through Dr. B.H. Kapadia, who was conversant in German language. This enabled the Department to establish International links.
This Department kept on thriving in the pursuit of knowledge under the scholarly leadership of reputed scholar of Sanskrit poetics Prof. Chitra Shukla (1977) widening the teaching and research areas viz. Sanskrit poetics and Modern Sanskrit.
This Department continued to progress under the leadership of Prof. B.G. Shukla (1990) in the field of Jyotish. From 1998 the Department is gradually widening its scope in the direction of social commitment under the leadership of Prof. Ajit I. Thakor (1998) the Department Continued to progress in the field of Sanskrit poetics. Prof. Niranjan P. Patel leads the Department from June 2012 in the field of Nyaya, Vedant and Vyakarana.
We have rendered an important social service in the form of cataloguing of the manuscripts of a public Library.
