Greetings from the department of chemistry, Sardar Patel University. Ours is one of the department established in 1958 along side the university office in the main campus. It started as a single faculty department with a noble cause of imparting higher education in the subject of chemistry to the students mainly coming from the rural back ground and impart necessary skills required for the grooming chemical industries in this western part of the country, for creating self entrepreneurs and also churn out academicians and researchers who can take up jobs in educational institutes and research laboratories. With a small beginning, the path for progress and development was smooth and gradual. Today we are one of the top two departments in the state of Gujarat and first such twenty five departments in the country. The department has excelled in teaching and research with a sanctioned strength of 26 faculty, more than ten technical and lab staff, ably assisted by the administrative support staff. More than 3000 students were awarded M. Sc degree in different branches of specialization namely organic, inorganic, physical, analytical and industrial polymer chemistry. Industrial polymer chemistry teaching is pioneered by the department even though it was started as a PG degree in petroleum and petro polymers. The growth of the department is synonymous with the setting up and evolution of giant petrochemical, polymer, dyes, drugs and paint and coating industries in the surrounding environs. The recognition of the departmental research is quite evident as UGC has sanctioned four phases of SAP, one phase of COSIST, first phase of CAS. The feather in the glory cap of the department is UGC has sanctioned phase one of centre for potential of excellence to our university recognizing its research and academic contribution by denoting it as nodal department. At present second phase same program is on. The department houses various sophisticated equipment such as 13C NMR, Tensile Testing Machine, DMA, simultaneous TGA and DSC, AFM, High Temperature GPC, Static Light Scattering, VSM, Elemental Analyzer, Fluorescence Spectrophotometer and several equipment for characterization, polymer testing and analysis. The department follows the UGC and state govt norms in the admission process. We welcome the prospective students and researchers for a useful stint with us.
