Brief History of the Department of Education

The post graduate department of education was established in 1964 in the constituent education college name M.B. Patel College of Education. It was felt need of the university to start a separate full-fledged department of education more concentrated on research & extension activities.After thorough discussion it was decided to start planned activities both academic & research. Therefore, it was started in 1988.

Before NCTE came in operation, department was also running part-time M.Ed. course & Diploma course of practical needs of teachers & school principals.After the statutory intervention of NCTE rules & regulations, only face to face transaction is compulsory, therefore full time M.Ed.programme was run by the department. From the very beginning, research was the prime focus of the department. Department also supervised the research work leading to Ph.D. degree of the students from abroad i.e., Thailand. The major areas of research are educational philosophy, educational psychology, psychometry testing, educational management, metacognition, models of teaching.

Present Status of the Department

Present Status of the Department

  • The Department runs full time M.Ed. programme which is of duration of four semesters including field attachment for a minimum of 4 weeks and research dissertation. Students are permitted to complete the programme requirements of the two-year programme within a maximum period of three years from the date of admission to the programme. The semester break is used for field work/practicum and research related other activities.
  • The Department also runs Full time Ph. D Programme. At the department students are pursuing their doctoral research on full time basis and part time basis.
  • The department has well qualified staff. Along with the head, there are 03 Associate Professors and 04 assistant professors appointed on the regular basis.
  • All the faculty members are Ph.D. holders and 03 are University recognised Ph.D. Guides as well.

The department plans to work in the direction of

  • Designing and executing MOOC courses for the M Ed Programme.
  • Offering Value added certificate courses in blended mode related to Indian Education System, Guidance and Counselling, Techno-pedagogy, Advanced Research Methodology, Life Skills based Education, Code and Conduct for in-service teachers.
  • Preparing reservoir of abstracts of doctoral researches conducted at Sardar Patel University.
  • Hosting state level and National level seminars, workshops and conferences in the area of teacher Education.
  • Reviving the Research Journal “Educational Psychology” for encouraging researches in the area of teacher education.
  • Designing modules for enhancing pedagogical knowledge and insight in the area of Teacher Education.
  • Conducting longitudinal survey of the implementation of NEP 2020 at various levels of education.
