Department Profile


The Department of Business Studies (formerly Department of Commerce) was established in 1964 as a teaching and research department of the Sardar Patel University, Vallabh Vidyanagar, Gujarat. Prof. M. M. Shah, M. A. Economics, London was the founder head and a well-known academician and administrator. During the 47 years of the existence, the department has established itself as a centre of excellence with focus on education, research and extension services. The department offers post-graduate level programmes in Commerce viz., M.Com., M.Phil., Doctoral programmes leading to Ph.D. and PG Diplomas. The Department has core faculty strength of 8 members and 5 posts are vacant.

CURRICULAR ASPECTS

  • Programmes: The department offers post-graduate level programmes in Commerce viz., M.Com., M.Phil., Doctoral programmes leading to Ph.D. and evening PG Diplomas.
  • M.Com., M.Phil., Ph.D.: Our is the only department in the Gujarat producing highest number of Ph.D. (95), M.Phil. (217) and M.Com. regular. During 2010-11 more than 500 students were registered.
  • M. Com. (CBCS): The department has introduced Choice Based Credit System from June 2010 incorporating Semester System and grade base evaluation offering core courses, elective courses (specializations) and soft skill courses at each semesters to enhance employability.

TEACHING-LEARNING AND EVALUATION

  • Faculty Members:
  • The Department has core faculty strength of 8 members and 5 posts are vacant.
  • One NET cleared junior level faculty members in the department.
  • Retired Prof. M. K. Patel is recognised as Emeritus Professor by UGC, New Delhi.
  • Dr.  P. K. Rathod, Prof. & Head visited USA from April 19th to June 8th 2011. He contacted Dr. Sanjay Gupta, Dean, Department of Accounting,  Michigun State University, Michigun, USA and Dr. Mohinder, Dean, Department of Accounting, Oakland University, Michigun, USA for collaboration work in future in the thrust area of UGC-SAP.
  • Dr. Y. M. Dalvadi, Asst. Professor visited Tourism Department of Bangkok, Thailand on September, 2009. He met Officials of the Tourism Department to have their views on ‘Tourism Development in Thailand’.
  • Dr. S. K. Bhatt, Professor, participated in the International Conference on Knowledge Globalisation held at Dhaka (Bangladesh) 8-10 May, 2010 organised by North South University, Bangladesh, Snffolk University, USA and Knowledge Globalisation Institute Bostan, USA. He presented a paper on “Financing to the poor: An evaluation of some lending Microfinance Institutions of India” and he also visited Grameen Bank Bangladesh for his thrust area in his Major Research Project on Micro finance, Finance by U.G.C.
  • Refresher Courses/Seminars/Workshops:

Department organized 5 UGC sponsored Refresher Courses in Commerce, 22 National and State Level Seminars, 2 Workshops and one All India Commerce Conference in 1965.



RESEARCH, CONSULTANCY AND EXTENSION

  • Research:

Our faculty has a track record of academic excellence, possessing highest level of competency in terms of qualifications, training and exposure. Senior faculty members are approved research guides supervising M.Phil. and doctoral work in the Faculty of Business Studies (Commerce).

  • Academic Excellence:
  • The academic excellence of our teachers is manifested through their academic which reveals their achievements in terms of number of UGC Major Research Projects, Minor Research Projects, books, holding executive membership at the national levels professional associations, international collaborations and also being university rank holders at the master levels.
  • Publications of books (65), publications of articles (174).
  • Participation as a session chairperson, co-chairperson, executive member, office bearer in the international/national/state seminars/conferences.
  • Major Research Projects and Minor Research Projects:

Faculty members completed five (5) major research projects and eleven (19) minor research projects while presently four major research projects and one minor research project are ongoing.



INFRASTRUCTURE AND LEARNING RESOURCES

  • Infrastructure:

The department is well-equipped with computers, printers, duplicating machine, jumbo zerox machines, T.V. VCR, OHP, LCD Projectors, Internet facility, audio-visual system, well-furnished conference-room, computer lab, LCD projector system in class rooms etc.



INNOVATIVE PRACTICES

  • FDP, IIM - Ahmedabad:

Three existing and three former faculty members who have successfully pursued the Faculty Development Programme in Management (FDP) of Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A).

  • Collaboration:

M. O. U. with Bhaktivedanta, College of Budapest, Hungary (Europe) was made to exchange students and teachers (both ways) for academic growth and excellence in the various areas of management with Sardar Patel University.

  • ICA / IAA / IIPA/AIFUCTO Members:

Faculty members are actively represented in the National level body in the field of Commerce, Accounting, IIPA viz., All India Commerce Association, All India Accounting Association, Indian Institute of Public Administration and All India Federation for Universities and Colleges Teachers Organisation.

  • UGC – SAP (DRS I ) : 2007 - 2012

Major achievement of the Department is induction of the Department to Special Assistance Programme (SAP) of UGC at the DRS I level in the thrust areas of “Corporate Disclosure and Investors Protection in India in a changing scenario” for the 5 years period from 1.04.2007 to 31.03.2012. Our is the only department in Gujarat which has been awarded Special Assistance Programme (SAP) to raise quality in teaching and research in the thrust areas especially in the field of Accounting. Dr. P. K. Rathod, Professor & Head is the Coordinator and Dr. S. K. Bhatt, Professor is the Dy. Coordinator of the scheme.

Future Plans

  • The department with a solid foundation of teaching, research, extension activities and features is planning to introduce electives focusing on skill enhancement and employability and also short term programmes for the development of students of rural areas of Gujarat.
  • Department intends to carryout systematic and well structured UGC NET/SET Counselling as a mission.
  • Department is focusing more on societal research and is also planning to have research collaboration with foreign universities.
  • To cope up with the advancement in education, department is to depute remaining faculties for FDP programme at IIM, Ahmedabad.
