Department Profile

The Postgraduate Institute of Business Management at Sardar Patel University was established in 1982.

A two-year (full-time) MBA Programme accordingly commenced in 1989. The programme, currently, has an intake of 80 students and is duly approved by

All India Council for Technical Education, (AICTE), New Delhi. The University Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi and the Government of Gujarat generously support it. The Master’s degree programme in Business Administration (MBA) seeks to provide opportunities to young men and women to acquire knowledge and skills and develop attitudes essential for assuming positions of leadership in the management profession.

Department also offers Ph. D. Programme in management. More than 100 students have been awarded the degree and currently 47 are pursuing their Ph. D. under the guidance of senior faculty members.

From a modest beginning the Institute has made rapid strides in achieving its stated objectives. It can boast of a well-qualified and experienced faculty, a richly stocked library and a well-equipped compute room. The Institute is located at the new building that was inaugurated by the then Honorable Finance Minister and the current Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on December 17th, 1994. In addition to all this the Institute has a large auditorium cum seminar hall with a seating capacity of 300 persons. A separate NRI hostel with 26 double-seated rooms having all facilities was commissioned on 15 June 2001 and is now fully functional. The institute also has a fully air conditioned Seminar/Conference room with a capacity to accommodate 80 persons.

All the graduating MBA students have received excellent job placements in reputed business and industrial organizations.

The Business India survey 1999-2000 ranks the institute as an “A” grade institute in a major study comprising all the AICTE recognized business schools in India. Department is actively engaged in research. It successfully completed UGC SAP –I and II onConsumer research in Rural Areas. Department undertook research consultancy for Government on Knowledge, Attitude, Behaviour, Belief and Practices (KABBP) -Base line Election Survey assigned by Election Commission of India in Assembly election of Gujarat, July-September 2012. Faculty members of the department are also involved in preparing District HumanDevelopment Report of Panchmahals District as coordinator and co-coordinator.

History

The Postgraduate institute of business management at Sardar Patel University was established in 1982 with the help of generous donation from Late Shri Gordhanbhai Hathibhai Patel with a view to impart professional management education & training to executives and personnel employed in various organizations in the vicinity of Vallabh Vidyanagar and Anand. The institute initially offered five postgraduate diploma courses in the areas of Marketing, Finance, Personnel, Production and Business Management to cater to the requirements of business and industry.

In course of time, however, there was a felt-need to educate and train potential managers to meet the changing requirements of business and industry in Gujarat. The changing business environment created a rising demand for young professionally trained persons to occupy the position of executives at the Junior and entry levels. The manager of the future was envisaged to possess competencies of conceptualizing, abstract thinking and analysis, in addition to skill required for a better comprehension, understanding and ability to cope up with threats arising from their task environments. The institute, therefore, took up the challenge to meet the call of time and contribute its might to the cause of management education and training.

The present building has now 1900 sq .mts. of space for class rooms and computer lab. In addition to all this, the institute has a large auditorium cum seminar hall with a seating capacity of 300 persons. A separate NRI hostel with 26 double-seated rooms having all facilities was commissioned on June 15, 2001. The institute also has a fully air-conditioned seminar/conference room with a capacity to accommodate 80 persons.

The MBA Programme offered by the institute is approved by the AICTE and funded by the UGC, New Delhi and the Government of Gujarat.

For admission to the MBA Programme,the eligibility criteria and norms are laid down by the nodal agency of Government of Gujarat Directorate of Higher and Technical Education, Government of Gujarat.

The two-year programme is spread over four semesters. In all, twenty-seven subjects and two comprehensive projects are covered in the programme. The curriculum and the course work has been carefully designed with the help of experts to provide relevant knowledge, skills, and attitudinal components in each subject. The teaching methodology comprises of interactive classroom discussion including case analysis, presentations, role plays, simulations, in-basket exercises, business games, seminars, field work, computer aided instructions and industrial visits to help students cope with whatever they may encounter in the corporate world. Computer and MIS form an integral part of the MBA Programme and due emphasis is given to them.

Future Plans

During coming years the department plans for
1) to continue to impart quality education following changing economy and business scenario.
2) to collaborate with corporate and renowned academic - national and international institutions.
3) to further enhance regular academic industry interaction through research projects for students.
4) to work for departmental accreditation for quality enhancement.
5) to do consultancy and live projects useful to corporate and government and non-government institutions.
6) to develop consultancy linkages specifically with MSME units in the region.
